Overview of my life before technology

I was born the eldest of four children to my parents who were farmers running a mainly arable farm with a large quantity of turkeys for the Christmas period and forced (indoor) rhubarb during the winter months. Prior to leaving school weekends and holidays would be spent working on the farm earning ‘pocket money’. After leaving school at 16 I joined the family business which was a medium sized farming business with 11 full time staff and many ‘seasonal workers’. I spent 3 years working with my father, out of which 10 months was spent at agricultural college. I now decided it was time to ‘plough my own furrow’ and became an agricultural contractor, supplying labour only to local farmers. Three years later my father was forced into early retirement, so I took over renting a portion of the land he farmed and grew produce mainly for a local grower co-operative which packed vegetables, salad and rhubarb for supermarket chains. After a period of 12 months I was invited to join the board as one of six directors, this was in addition to continuing growing produce.  Four years later the General Manager of the co-operative retired, and I was involved with trying to source a replacement which was proving difficult. After studying the salary offered and much discussion and soul searching I decided to apply for the job myself as it would provide a better income for my now young family which consisted of my wife and a baby on the way. I grew the company for four years adding new lines, new members and better working practices at which point a competitor put forward an offer to buy the company; the offer was so good that it was swiftly accepted by the board. Although the new owner offered to continue my employment with the same benefits, without director status, I decided that a change in direction was what I required…

TCM Telecom

I formed TCM Telecom initially working from home to fulfil the need created by the deregulation of the telecoms industry by the government of the time.

TCM initially was selling business to business with a limited portfolio of mobile phones and telephone systems. An opportunity arose to manufacture and supply steel reinforced payphone casings for the filling station and leisure industry, this led to the lease of our first commercial premises at Carr Gate, Wakefield. This was basically an industrial unit in which we built a ‘shop front’ to service our business customers and the remainder of the unit was involved in assembly and packaging of the payphone cases.

As time progressed the portfolio expanded, mainly due to customer demand, initially we added IT and networking, this was followed by CCTV and in a much smaller capacity EPOS systems.  After much research and R&D we have now  added the TCM PABX - ultimate telephone system to our portfolio; this is a system hosted in a state of the art data centre which customers rent extensions from us at a monthly cost that includes UK local, national and mobile calls.
